South Island
Te Anau
Enjoy a slow morning in Queenstown before taking SH6 south past the Double Cone peak (stunning in winter when it’s dusted with snow) and continue along the south-east edge of Wakatipu. Stop at the Devil’s Staircase lookout point along the way, then carry on through Kingston before taking SH97 through Acton and then SH94 north-west. A little over two hours from Queenstown and you’ll be at the picturesque gateway to the fjords, Te Anau.
Along with its Great Walks and cycling, Te Anau attracts visitors from across the world – especially in the busiest months of January–March – for its fishing, kayaking, and the Te Anau Glowworm Caves. Consider a romantic cruise on the lake itself and breathe in the scenery.
